Happy Tax Freedom Day 2013

Happy Tax Freedom Day 2013
Monday, 27 May 2013 13:36

Tax freedom day is on 30 May 2013.

Tax Freedom day is calculated each year by the Adam Smith Institute. If you add up all of the tax by people paid in the UK (Income Tax, National Insurance, VAT, Fuel Duty, Alcohol and Tobacco taxes, Council Tax and the rest) and then work out how long it collectively takes the UK to earn that much the day when everything is finally paid off is the 30th May.

We are having to wait an extra day for Tax Freedom Day this year and 3 more days than in 2011.

Dr Eamonn Butler of the Adam Smith Institute recently blogged "That's five months of the year working for the government, and only seven months of the year working for ourselves. Things don't seem to have moved on much from the feudal system, where the oppressed vassals were expected to work three days a week for the benefit of their lord. We have to work about the same for the benefit of the Chancellor.

If you think that's bad, it gets worse. Governments spend everything they raise in taxes from us – and then borrow as much more as they can get away with. The trouble is that is it we taxpayers, or our children, who will have to pay back that debt. When you work out the total – what we call Cost of Government Day – we don't start enjoying the fruits of our own labour until 13 July!"
