Online filing of P45's and P46's is being encouraged by both the HMRC and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Currently only businesses with over 50 employees need to file these returns online. However, with little over 6 months to go before all companies need to do so HMRC are urging business to early adopt and acclimatise themselves to teh new system.

Failure by the smaller businesses to file online from 6 April 2011 will attract penalities depending on t henuber and frequency of the failures.

Anita Monteith, the ICAEW's tax faculty technical manager, said: "To avoid penalties employers need to ensure they do not send HMRC forms on paper when they should be filed online, or send two versions of the same form. Online filing is quick, secure and convenient, and can cut down on errors and the delays they can cause."
