It has been predicted that one day of employee absence due to the snow could cost £230 million in the UK.  The figure produced by the Forum of Private Business is based on the daily GDP figure, anticipated vehicle breakdown levels, average salaries and a predicted fall in retail sales.

The Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) has also warned that the weather will have major implications on payroll departments dealing with high levels of staff absenteeism. Payroll departments can easily become overstretched.

Businesses need to prepare their payroll and HR staff to deal with the possibility of having to help cross train other departments to step in and undertake the workloads of other colleagues, as well as work out whether there are contractual obligations to pay staff even if they cannot come into work.

Elaine Gibson, Senior Policy Officer at the IPP, said: Businesses need to prepare their payroll departments to deal with the implications of a large number of employee absences this week due to bad weather. Companies also need to be aware of the consequences resulting from payroll staff being among those that are snowed in. Organisations should have contingency plans in place to handle a threat to its payroll operations."
